Howabout the elections for other state and local offices, did you vote a straight ticket or did you vote for candidates from different parties. (IF STRAIGHT TICKET: ) Which party?/ (IF SPLIT TICKET:) How did you split it?
Straight or split ticket voting in state and local races, five categories · Asked in 9 waves, 1964–1984 · 9,028 responses · weighted estimates computed from individual responses
Not loaded for 1952-1962: those years did not record which way most split-ticket voters split (86% to 97% of them are coded 3, 'NA how split', vs. 19% to 38% from 1964 on; codebook 1958 and 1962 notes). Straight vs. split ticket for 1948-1984 is in VCF0716. Codes that include 'no Pre/Post IW' were dropped for respondents without that interview. Dropped as not asked: 0 'DK; NA; R did not vote; DK, NA if voted; refused to say if voted; refused to say who voted for; form III or IV (1972); didn’t vote (or DK/NA if voted) in state and local elections; no partisan state or local elections; voted straight ticket, NA which party; voted straight ticket, ‘other’ party; voted split ticket, mostly ‘other’ party; Washington D.C. (non-presidential years)'. Codebook notes: 1962 NOTE: ‘Split ticket, mostly ’other’ party’ was combined in study data with ‘split ticket, NA how split.’ Because of the very small number of cases voting mostly or entirely for a 3rd/minor party, this combination category was recoded to 3. 1958 NOTE: If R voted Democratic or Republican with only 1 exception, then R was coded as ‘straight ticket.’
