16 NYC schools tag themselves as STEM-focused. Their grade-5 math proficiency averages 56.7% — versus 54.2% for the 765 schools without the STEM tag. The 2.5-point gap is within noise. Topic branding doesn't drive math outcomes.

Supporting findings

  • Survey kids: 'do you think your school is good at science?' — perception vs measured outcome.
  • Visit the highest-performing STEM-tagged ES and the lowest — what differs?
