Why does middle school cause the academic cliff?

Thesis
Grade-3 math proficiency is 62% citywide; grade-7 math proficiency is 50%. The gap holds across school types and demographics — kids systematically lose ground entering middle school. The 'middle school cliff' is real and well-documented, but NYC's data lets us see where it's steepest.

- Selective MS (screened/composite) have less cliff because they admit kids already above grade level.
- The cliff is structural: kids hit puberty, social dynamics change, content abstracts, instruction may not match.
- What works: 6-grade-on-the-school transition (less switching), advisory periods, AVID-style support.
