Half of new American billionaires arrive after 58.
A current list shows how old billionaires are now, not how old they were when they got there. This page follows the 876 people Forbes has listed as American who first appeared on a list between 2011 and 2026 — after being on none of the 2001–2010 lists — and records their age at that first appearance.
The cumulative curve: what share had made a list by each age.
The typical American entrant is 58: only about 3% had appeared by 30 and 14% by 40, so the billionaire in their thirties is a thin slice of the 876. Americans do arrive somewhat younger than everyone else below 50 (13.6% by 40 against 9.8%), but the curves cross around age 50 and thereafter stay within two points of each other; averaged across the 15 ages plotted, they differ by 0.13 of a point. One note on the horizontal axis: "age at first list" is the age at the March list on which a person first appeared, so the billion-dollar line was crossed up to a year earlier. The band shows where the American curve sits if everyone is counted a year older (lower edge) or two years younger (upper edge), a measurement range rather than a confidence interval. Net worths are Forbes estimates.
The shaded band is how much the curve moves if everyone is counted a year older (the lower edge) or two years younger (the upper edge) — a March list can only say someone crossed the line at some point in the preceding year, and the asymmetry allows for people who were billionaires a while before Forbes noticed. Ages come from Forbes' birth dates for 828 of the 876 Americans, and from reported ages otherwise.
The youngest new American billionaires are mostly builders. The youngest elsewhere are mostly heirs.
Expected share who inherited, by age at first list. “Expected” because each person counts at the probability that Forbes' flag is right about them — explained under the chart.
Look at the youngest bar on each side of the chart: among Americans who first appeared on the Forbes list before turning 30, an expected 14% inherited their fortune, against 68% of the rest of the world's under-30 arrivals — the widest US-to-world gap anywhere in the table. The US figure then dips to 9% in the 30s before climbing to 30% for those first listed in their 60s, while outside the US the inherited share stays at or above 19.5% in every band. "Expected" means each person is counted at a calibrated probability rather than a yes or no: checked against the Peterson Institute's hand-coded database, Forbes' not-self-made flag is right about inheritance roughly 88% of the time, and its self-made flag is wrong less than 1% of the time. The range columns are calibration ranges, not sampling intervals. Treat the under-30 bars gently: they rest on 23 US and 46 non-US people. Net worths are Forbes estimates.

Expected values: someone Forbes flags as not self-made counts 88% of an heir, someone flagged self-made counts 0.7%, and the 122 people hand-coded in the Peterson Institute database count exactly 1 or 0. Those rates come from matching 425 American billionaires across the two sources, where the labels agree 96% of the time. Ranges are the 95% intervals on the two rates, not on the sample. The 57 Americans with no Forbes flag are left out of these shares; counting them at the hand-coded base rate gives 23% overall instead of 22%, and treating every one of them as an heir gives 27%.
