Sources: IRS Form 990-PF e-filings (XML via GivingTuesday's public mirror of the IRS corpus), IRS Exempt Organizations Business Master File. E-filed returns only — e-filing became mandatory for foundations at tax year 2020; earlier years are included where a foundation e-filed and shown as gaps where it filed on paper. Recipients are matched to IRS records by name and state; unmatched and foreign recipients are kept visible as their own entries, never dropped. Categories come from a recipient's NTEE code where matched, and from a language-model reading of the grant purpose where not. Built as part of findwhat.works. Foundation Atlas is a personal project in beta: I do my best to parse, match, and label 11.6 million grants accurately, but I can't guarantee every number is perfect — check the underlying filings before relying on any figure, and treat categories, themes, and lean scores as informed estimates rather than facts.
